3-20-2025 Jeff explains that successful investment firms must have three elements: trust, a solid investment strategy, and strong operational compliance. The Future Fund aims to provide institutional-quality strategies in an efficient and transparent way.
TRANSCRIPT
I think one of the things that your friends and clients admire is you're always on their side and you've done it all. The legal side and the compliance side, which is a big hangup in this business, and it's critical that you are compliant, the product design side, marketing needs and how all that fits in.
What do you think all of the contacts and relationships you have will see of interest and value in the future funds? What's going to be the differentiating factor in your opinion?
Well, to me it's what you taught me early on is that basically it's a process. So I've always taken the approach that there's three things to a successful salesperson. One is they have to trust you as an individual. You have your reputation. That's all you have. So there has to be that trust because they're looking across the table.
If something goes wrong, they can pick up the phone, they can call you. They know their problem's going to get taken care of. Two is you have to have the right strategy. It has to perform. No one's in this business to give their friends money. It doesn't work that way, but you have to have the strategy. And third, the firm has to be there. Operational compliance has to be there. And the beauty of the ETF and being a small firm is all that is outsourced.
The process has been there, it's been over 20 years - ETFs - and it's actually a very elegant solution for a majority of investors. So for me to come from a larger firm environment back to a startup, it's challenging because you have to do everything. But that's also the exciting part of it and being able to convey that excitement to our future clients.
And the value proposition is bring active management to the retail, to the institutional, right now, in a very succinct, very tax efficient package. We can do separate accounts and model accounts with what we do. What we do is very scalable. My job is to have the portfolio managers do what best they do best, pick stocks.
And the real exciting part is the types of strategies we're offering, Phil. High conviction, these are megatrend companies. These are companies that are changing the world, have been and will be changing the world into the future.
And the second part of that is kind of the hedge fund mentality. Gary Black's experience managing long, short and hedge funds. So we have the ability here to bring something that in the past you had to basically, you had to be very wealthy. You had to pay a hedge fund manager an exorbitant amount of money. And there's an old joke in the industry that everyone wants to be a hedge fund manager because it's the greatest wealth transfer mechanism in the world. You take your experience and their money and make it your money and their experience.
We're not doing that in The Future Funds. We're actually bringing what previously was reserved for high net worth Wall Street investors to the Main Street investors, and we're doing it very tax efficiently.
